We visited the classrooms of The English School of Asturias
The school is located on an idyllic campus in the heart of nature on the outskirts of Oviedo, just 20 minutes from Gijón. You can visit by scheduling a personalized appointment or attending their next open day. Upon arrival, you’ll notice a modern building designed in a practical and welcoming manner. The educational project also reflects a commitment to modern education, student-centered learning, and full English language immersion. The native faculty comes from different countries, creating an enriching and diverse educational community that fully embraces diversity.
Entering the Early Years pavilion (Preschool), we find spacious, curved classrooms filled with light and color, with small groups of students interacting fluently and naturally in English with their teachers. The educational program for preschool revolves around personal, social, and emotional development, focusing on respect, kindness, self-confidence, and exploration of the physical and human environment. With two qualified teachers in each classroom (tutor and teacher assistant) and through games, activities, and songs, intensive English practice is ensured from the age of 3.
We see happy, calm, and independent students effortlessly switching from their native language to English, to our admiration, as they started the course in Nursery just five months ago. Their 4-year-old peers already demonstrate the ability to converse and interact in more complex contexts in perfectly intonated English. Moving to the Primary Education section, we visit the Infants classes: Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3, whose classrooms have direct access to a sunny yard designed for play, sports, and contact with nature.
After laying the foundations for reading and writing in both English and Spanish, solidifying practical mathematics, and awakening their curiosity about the social and natural environment, the little ones will reach Key Stage 2, prepared for greater academic rigor and attention to detail, culminating in Secondary, becoming familiar with the good study habits required by the external official exams of the English curriculum, the IGCSE.
International education. The robust foundation laid by the British curriculum starting from the age of 3 reaches its pinnacle with the globally acclaimed International Baccalaureate Diploma
It’s no wonder that the OECD, responsible for the PISA reports on international academic performance, has relied on International Baccalaureate (IB) experts as advisors in their recommendations for education improvements. The IB Diploma Programme provides students aged 16 to 19 with a fully recognized qualification for direct entry into higher education, both in Spain and worldwide.
The English School of Asturias successfully completed the strict accreditation process to offer this prestigious program. Beyond academic depth and personalization in subject selection in the pre-university stage, the IB Diploma Programme encourages creativity, teamwork, initiative, and personal commitment. It also enhances key skills for future professionals. That’s why the best universities recognize the exceptional preparation of graduates from the IB Diploma Programme.
