At English School of Asturias we are very committed to the health of our students, as we know that it is the basis for them to develop all their abilities. We also know that ‘we are what we eat’ and that good health cannot exist without a complete and healthy diet. Therefore, from the beginning we knew that we had to design a balanced school menu, homemade and also suitable for all those students with other dietary needs.
With this article we want to bring the parents of our pupils into our kitchens and into the process of preparing the monthly school menu, as we know that it is important and reassuring for them to know that their children have a complete diet and that they can also have a vegetarian, gluten free or diabetic diet if they need it and at no extra cost.

Hands on: here’s what goes into every dish on our school menu

First of all, we knew that for a menu to be healthy and to preserve all the properties of the food, it had to be home-made. That is why we have our own kitchen at the school where our cooks prepare dishes from fresh food every day. To do this, they use the monthly school menu designed by experts, who ensure that the menu is balanced and complete. Our nurse advises them if they have any questions.
The menu is created so that every day the pupils have three freshly made, high quality hot dishes for lunch, always accompanied by salad, fruit, water and white or wholemeal bread as a side dish. In addition, each week the menu changes and there are different dishes every day, thus avoiding repetition and providing variety.

A healthy school menu for children of all requirements

We are well aware that some of our pupils suffer from allergies, food intolerances or follow another type of diet. For this reason, our experts design four different, but equally complete and balanced menus every month.

Basal menu

This is the menu we have prepared for most of our pupils. It is designed so that each day the children eat the right proportion of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. In addition, the menu always ends with a portion of seasonal fruit or plain unsweetened yoghurt. Stewed lentils, vegetable and turmeric cream, sweet rice with meat or potato omelette and sautéed mushrooms are some of the dishes that make up the school menu.

Vegetarian menu

The vegetarian menu is very similar to the basal menu, but with meat and fish being replaced by vegetable alternatives. Our experts have designed it to ensure that it also consists of complete and balanced dishes. For example, the rice pudding with meat is replaced for vegetarian students by rice pudding with artichokes and asparagus.

Diabetic menu

As with the vegetarian menu, the diabetic menu is very similar to the standard menu, but with modifications to ensure that diabetic pupils maintain healthy blood glucose levels. In this regard, foods such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains and protein are promoted, while carbohydrates and sugars are kept under control.
In addition, our nurse is in constant contact with the kitchen team to ensure the proper preparation of all dishes and monitors the blood glucose of diabetic students to calculate the insulin to be administered to each student.

Gluten free menu

Finally, it is also very common to have pupils with coeliac disease and gluten intolerance, so our experts have designed a healthy school menu for children with these conditions. In addition, in the kitchen, cross-contamination is taken into account, which is why we have a separate and distinct area in which gluten-free dishes are cooked. We even provide all pupils with allergies with a labelled and sealed tray to further ensure that there is no contamination.
We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions about our school menu. Our experts will be happy to help you and explain in more detail how they design and prepare the nutritional guidelines.
